The Backyard/Secondary Suite Award recognizes excellence in designing, constructing, and renovating additional living spaces that enhance affordability, flexibility, and multi-generational living options in Nova Scotia. This award celebrates projects that demonstrate:
- Innovation and Functionality – creative solutions to maximize small spaces, maintain privacy, and improve accessibility.
- Integration – how the suite complements the existing dwelling and surrounding property.
- Craftsmanship and Design – use of high-quality finishes, energy-efficient materials, and thoughtful layouts.
- Impact – addressing housing challenges through affordability, aging-in-place opportunities, and rental income potential.
This award highlights builders and renovators who transform backyards and underutilized spaces into valuable, functional homes while contributing to broader housing affordability and choice.
Requirements
Eligibility Criteria & Important Information:
• Renovations must have been completed during the period of January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025.
• Applicant must be considered a Renovator with CHBA NS.
• All applicants must be a member in good standing with CHBA NS.
Please ensure all parts of the application are complete. Award categories must receive at least 2 submissions to be considered an award. CHBA NS reserves the right to not present this award in any given year.
• A non-refundable fee of $100 must accompany each application.
